Overview
The Project explores the genetic diversity hidden within potatoes by growing new plants from seed rather than from cloned tubers. Unlike traditional potatoes, every true potato seed produces a genetically unique plant, making this an excellent long-term breeding project.
Last season I successfully produced my first true potato seeds by crossing a Red Pontiac potato with an unnamed purple-fleshed cultivar. Those seeds now form the foundation of this project.
Current Progress
Some of the first seedlings were started during winter but were lost due to insufficient lighting. Rather than restarting from scratch, I continued growing the remaining seedlings and have successfully established several vigorous young plants.
At the time of writing:
- Multiple seedlings are actively growing.
- Several have already been transplanted into larger containers.
- Additional seed has already been started for the next generation.
These plants will be grown to maturity and evaluated for tuber color, productivity, growth habit, vigor, and overall performance.
Breeding Goals
The objective is to combine the qualities I enjoy most from each parent.
The Red Pontiac contributes:
- Heavy yields
- Early maturity
- Excellent eating quality
- Compact, bush-like growth
The purple parent contributes:
- Deep purple flesh
- High antioxidant potential
- Vigorous, sprawling vine growth
Future selections will focus on combining productivity with unique coloration while documenting how these traits are inherited over successive generations.
