Project Overview
The Micro-dwarf Tomato Breeding Project is one of the fastest-moving research projects on this site — and one of the most practical for studying plant genetics in real time. Unlike fruit trees that require years before meaningful evaluation, tomatoes complete their life cycle quickly enough to run multiple generations in a single growing season. A micro-dwarf tomato/s lifespan makes them an excellent model organism for learning and applying selective breeding principles.
The goal is not simply to grow micro-dwarf tomatoes, but to create original cultivars: plants with unique colors, shapes, and growth habits, while preserving the compact size that makes micro-dwarfs ideal for containers and small gardens.
Flavor is not the primary focus here. The emphasis is on visual distinctiveness, plant architecture, and understanding how traits are inherited and expressed across successive generations. Every cross is a question. Every generation is an answer.
Foundation Lines
The project began with these 7 primary Micro Dwarf cultivar lines selected for their color complexity and growth habit:
Pinocchio Orange (PO)

Flora Gold (FG)

Tumbling Tiger (TG)

Tartufo (T)

Hardin's Miniature

Blue Room (BR)

Blunny Blues (BB)

These lines serve as the project backbone. They will be crossed with heirloom and rare tomato varieties to introduce new genetics — particularly for fruit color, shape, and plant form — before selecting desirable offspring over multiple generations.
Current Crosses
The first successful pollinations have been completed. Current F1 crosses include:
- Flora Gold × Black Cherry 7/14/26
- Flora Gold × Cherokee Purple 7/14/26
- Flora Gold × German Pink 7/14/26
The F1 seeds will be grown later in September and crossed again with Female parent to keep the Dwarf trait. These first-generation plants will be uniform in most traits but will carry the combined genetics of both parents. The real selection work begins in the F2 generation, where trait segregation produces the variation needed to identify promising individuals.
Future generations will be evaluated and selected for fruit color, plant size, productivity, and overall appearance, with the most distinctive and stable individuals carried forward.
Community Participation
As the project expands, the plan is to involve other growers by sharing experimental seed lines. Growing the same lines across multiple locations and climates accelerates the evaluation process and produces more reliable data than a single garden can provide alone.
