Kiwi (A. Deliciosa, Arguta)

The Project is an exploration of genetic diversity within both Actinidia arguta & deliciosa.

Current work focuses on growing seedlings from red-fleshed and golden-fleshed fuzzy kiwis (A. deliciosa) to observe how fruit color, vigor, growth habit, and other characteristics segregate in future generations. I am also growing hardy kiwi to evaluate long-term performance and adaptability to pacific northwest climate and conditions.

Unlike the tomato project, this is a long-term experiment. Kiwi vines may take several years before producing fruit, making patience one of the biggest parts of the project.

Throughout the process I’ll document growth, flowering, fruit quality, and any unusual or desirable characteristics. Surplus vines and propagation material may eventually be made available for gardeners interested in growing kiwis in similar climates.
